The PASTINNOVA Summer school on INNOVATIONS FOR SUSTAINABLE MEDITERRANEAN PASTORAL SYSTEMS was held in Zaragoza and the Pyrenees (Spain, 30 May, 7 June 2024. The course was addressed to young professionals from Mediterranean countries. The course was designed to give a broad vision of ideas and solutions for the future of pastoral and land-based livestock farming, whose environmental, social and cultural benefits are well known. Some technical aspects of production, possible improvements in marketing and the generation of economic value, initiatives for the organisation of livestock farmers, the inclusion and visibility of pastoralist women, the resolution of conflicts in the pastoral territory, the improvement of work and the social image of pastoral activity and how to promote this system of production and way of life from public policies will be discussed.
The programme consisted of 5 days of classroom sessions (37.5 teaching hours) and 3 days of field visits (1 in Zaragoza, 2 in the Pyrenees). Classes consisted in lectures and some practical activities based on working groups. In addition, there were two short visits integrated in the classes programme. A group of 31 young professionals as attendees, and 20 professors from a total of 12 Mediterranean countries. Apart from the more formal activities, the fact of exchanging between people with convergent interests but different backgrounds and activities was very appreciated. And it was also the occasion of a group of innovative pastoralists farmers, cooperatives and project holders in the territory to showcase their experiences and exchange with the course group.
