Pastoral systems sustainability extends beyond environmental concerns to involve social aspects that affect stakeholders, including local communities, and animal welfare. Introduced in 2009 as part of the Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment methods, Social Life Cycle Assessment (S-LCA) follows the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) guidelines (2020) and the recently released standard ISO 14075 (2024) to systematically assess the social impacts of products, services, or organizations throughout their life cycles. By applying this methodology, researchers and practitioners can address important issues such as food security, health and safety, working conditions, animal welfare, and the socio-economic effects of pastoral production on local communities. Moreover, regulatory policies reinforce the need for a comprehensive sustainability assessment that includes social indicators.
