The seminar called for a collective reflection on the stakes and challenges for the future of pastoralism in the Mediterranean in a context of great uncertainty in terms of environmental transformation, economic upheavals and evolution of policy frameworks. A presentation by Michele Nori provided insight into the links between agrarian and pastoral dynamics of change and public policies in the Mediterranean region, and the resulting orientations and perspectives.
Building upon the concept of public action, participants identified and discussed experiences of organization and collective action, especially around territorial policies, which try to reverse socio-economic and environmental trends perceived as problematic, and to renew the place of pastoralism in landscapes and food systems.
The Seminar took place during two days and it covered the following topics:
- Agricultural and development policies and the practice of pastoralism in Europe, Maghreb and Middle-East.
- Public policy and pastoralism local trends.
- Public action initiatives in Pastinnova fields of work.
Outcome / Deliverables.
Outcome
- Open the collective reflection work of the Pastinnova project team on public policy and action, dynamics of change of pastoral systems, territorial integration modalities, possibilities for reform and innovation.
- Share a diagnosis of the links between public policies in their diversity, and agrarian and pastoral transformations within the identified regions
- Suggest and justify the interest of a multi-sectoral, multi-actor and multi-scale approach to study policy and collective action processes.
- Receive feedbacks from team members and partners on how the regional policy trends translate into local contexts and generate specific key dynamics.
- Identify key cross-cutting themes in different contexts which to focus on in the Work Package 5 of Pastinnova.
