Regulatory Flexibility for Small Producers: Enhancing the Value of Pastoral Products

Abstract.

This document summarises an analysis of the main areas where small producers need flexible and adapted EU and Member State legislation, and the barriers to such flexibility that have been identified. This flexibility is one of the principles of European legislation and does not conflict with appropriate food safety and hygiene requirements. Although it focuses in EU regulatory context, its main message on adapting hygiene and food safety regulations to artisanal food production is applicable elsewhere.

Webinar III: Co-design of Agri-environmental Agreements in Mediterranean Pastoral Systems - Presentation by Matteo Francioni

Abstract.

Agri-environmental agreements have been proven as valuable tools to implement the environmental policies objectives, among them the improvement of the services delivered by ecosystems that co-evolved with human activities such as extensive livestock herding. Relying solely on the single-farm scale for agri-environmental measures often fails to meet environmental goals, as many biophysical processes, such as biodiversity loss or soil erosion, occur at the landscape scale. This creates a mismatch between the scale of applied measures and ecological processes. In this seminar, we propose an innovative framework to co-design site-specific and landscape-scale agri-environmental measures to address this issue. Agri-environmental agreements for the co-management of pastoral systems. Using case studies from Italy, the webinar will focus on three key needs: Early stakeholder inclusion for a landscape-scale approach: Participatory processes without predefined rules, allowing active stakeholder involvement: and Integration of local knowledge to enhance the landscape dimension
